It was in 1987 when MacBain and his wife Marcy founded the ‘Hebdo Mag’ in the Netherlands. Three years later, the company acquired the French publishing company La Centrale. This marked the beginnings of the growth outside thE Canadian and American markets.
However, in 2006, John MacBain liquidated and sold the companies to focus on his foundation. The Yellow Pages Group, the directories publisher in Canada, purchased the Trader Classified Media including trader.com.
This lead to the creation of Trader Corporation. To cope up with the changing needs of the market, the Trader Corporation (now under the ownership of the British private equity firm Apax Partners) stopped publishing the Auto Trader Magazine and other publications to provide online-only car advertising.
It was only in 2016 when the Trader Corp. is sold to the American private equity and growth capital firm Thoma Bravo.
