It currently operates in three countries – the US, Mexico, and Canada – and should not be confused with the company from New Zealand of the same name. Bed Bath & Beyond New Zealand is also in the same industry but does not have any connection to the American brand.
History of Bed Bath & Beyond
Working in managerial positions in the discount store chain Arlan’s, Warren Eisenberg, and Leonard Feinstein decided to leave due to the company’s financial difficulties. This led them to open a store named Bed’n Bath in Springfield, New Jersey in 1971.
The company opened a superstore in an attempt to remain competitive with other stores in the same industry. In 1987, the company changed its name to Bed Bath & Beyond to better reflect the increased scale of its retail stores.
The company went public in June 1992 on the NASDAQ stock exchange under the ticker BBBY. One of the important milestones of the company is when they opened their website in 1999, joining the other booming eCommerce websites at the time.
The company continued to acquire businesses in the 21st century, such as BuyBuyBaby in 2007. Unfortunately, just this 2019, the company faced some controversy regarding the removal of the current CEO at the time – Steven Tamares – due to several cases of what seems to be nepotism.
The acquisition of some businesses by the company was owned by the children of the co-founders. Tamares stepped down in May 2019 and the company restructured the board. The company celebrated its 50th year in 2021.
