Canada Post is the primary postal operator in Canada, with its headquarters in Ottawa, Ontario. The Canada Post Group is operated as a group of companies under the Canada Post. The organization offers courier express services, freight forwarding services, and logistical services.
Purolator Inc., a Canadian courier, is a subsidiary of Canada Post with 91% ownership. It is typically advertised as ‘Canada Post,’ but their legal name in English is Canada Post Corporation.
History of Canada Post
The official postage services in Canada began in 1775 until 1851 under the control of the British government. However, it was 1867when the newly formed Canada established a federal government department by creating the Post Office Department.
It was headed by the Cabinet minister, which is the Postmaster General of Canada. The introduction of charging mail by weight instead of by destination, including the creation of postage stamps was from the British service created by Sir Rowland Hill. The new service was now trading under the name of The Royal Mail Canada.
Carrying mail from Montreal to Toronto, The Post Office Department was a pioneer when it comes to airmail delivery in 1918. Moving forward to October 1981, a Canada Post Corporation Act was passed by the Federal Parliament, turning into a Crown Corporation (creating Canada pOST Corporation (CPC)) in the same year.
The legislation also contains a provision that ensures that all Canadians have access to basic postal services. It states that all Canadians, regardless of where they live, have the right to receive mail delivery.
