High School students at the time, Wayfair founders Niraj Shah and Steve Conine first met at Cornell University. They both also studied engineering at the same university and lived in the same dorm. Their first business together is the global consulting company Simplify Mobile and iXL. Wayfair was originally called CSN Stores that was founded in August 2002.
It was only in 2008 when the then CSN Stores started shipping in Canada. Since CSN Stores are a collection of different online retail stores, the founders decided to merge more than 200 niche sites into one and calling it Wayfair.com. However, they still maintained two online stores: Joss & Main and AllModern.
The name ‘Wayfair’ has actually no meaning behind it, the name was chosen by a marketing agency through focus groups. Moving forward to 2020, the company announced a layoff of about three percent of their global workforce. In the same year, they also won the Webby Award for Shopping in the category of Apps, Mobile, and Voice.
