Lowe’s brand name may seem unique, but it should not be confused with other companies of the same name such as a regional US supermarket chain and Australian menswear. History of Lowe’s
Founder Lucius Smith Lowe opened the North Wilkesboro Hardware in Wilkesboro, North Carolina in 1921. Lucius’ daughter, Ruth Buchan, inherited the company but sold it to his brother Jim Lowe. Jim asked his brother-in-law Carl Buchan to be his partner in 1943.
After World War II, Carl expected a dramatic increase in construction as the business focused on building materials under his management. As a hardware, the store also focused on dry goods, horse tack, and even produce & groceries. In 1949, the company opened a second branch in Sparta, North Carolina.
Carl became the sole owner of the business and incorporated it as Lowe’s North Wilkesboro Hardware in 1952. Two years later, Carl also opened Lowes Foods – a grocery store chain.
He also expanded the company by opening more stores in North Carolina. Unfortunately, Carl died at the age of 44 that his executive team took the company public in the name Lowe’s Companies Inc. The company started trading on the New York Stock Exchange in 1979.
The following year, Lowe’s suffered as a new big-box store chain The Home Depot competed in the market. Lowe’s first store outside the US was in Ontario, Canada that opened on December 10, 2007. A few months later, they opened additional stores including one in Calgary. They also had operations in Mexico but it was closed in the late 2010s.
