Shoppers Drug Mart Corporation operates the Canadian retail pharmacy chain Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix in Quebec. It is also known for the PC Optimum program, one of the largest customer loyalty programs in Canada.
From the ownership of the Koffler family, it is now owned by Lowlab Companies. The family kept their ownership on another multinational pharmacy chain operating in Israel, Poland, and China – named Super-Pharm.
History of Shoppers Drug Mart
Pharmacist Murray Koffler inherited two Koffler’s drug pharmacies at the age of 20. It was in the 1970s when he decided to rename the chain of 17 pharmacies to ‘Shoppers Drug Mart,’ deriving the name from the Canadian shopping plaza named ‘Shoppers World Danforth.’
To move forward with the 20th-century concept of ‘drug store’ in Canada, they removed the normal soda fountain in stores and focused on medicine dispensaries. They applied the requirement for pharmacists to wear white coats that represent their professionalism. The company acquired multiple drug stores that have been merged with Shoppers Drug Mart.
Koffler retired in 1986 that led him to sell the chain to the Canadian company Imasco Limited. David Bloom, a former pharmacist of the company, was appointed Chief Executive Officer in the same year. In 2001, he retired from the company after a total of 30 years of service.
The start of the Shoppers Optimum loyalty program can be credited under his leadership. It became the largest and most successful customer loyalty program in Canada. Bloom was replaced by Glenn Murphy as the CEO, and the following year introduced the large store formats.
Lowlab Companies announce the acquisition of the company on July 15, 2013. The Shoppers Optimum was changed to the PC Optimum loyalty program. It was only in 2018 when the company opened its flagship store in Yonge-Dundas Square in Toronto, Ontario.
