History of Expedia
Microsoft actually founded Expedia as a company’s division in October 1996 by Rich Barton. The name “Expedia” was a combination of the words ‘exploration’ and ‘speed.’
Three years later, the division became a public company in 1999. For a reported $1.5 billion, IAC/InterActiveCorp (then known as USA Networks Inc) purchased a majority stake in the firm in 2001.
IAC/InterActiveCorp bought it completely in 2003, and it became part of IAC Travel where Barton was replaced by Erik Blachford. Then, the Iranian – American businessman Dara Khosrowshahi was announced as the new CEO when the name was changed to Expedia.
The change of name also included the ownership of travel group businesses that include Expedia, Egencia, TripAdvisor, Classic Vacations, Hotels.com, and Hotwire.com.
It was in December 2012 when Expedia bought a majority of stake in another metasearch engine Trivago for reportedly 630 million euros. The company further acquired different travel-related companies that made them grow, including the opening in different international markets and offices such as in Canada. The current CEO of Expedia Group as of writing is Peter Kern.
