History of Costco
Inspired by the concept of Price Club’s warehouse club retailing from businessman Sol Price, Jim Sinegal, and Jeffrey Brotman opened in September 1983 the first Costco warehouse in Seattle, Washington.
Sinegal worked for Price at FedMart and Brotman’s experience in retail is as a grocery bagger. The next significant event of the company happened in 1993 when it merged with Price Club, renaming it as PriceCostCo. It was in 1997 when the name was changed from Costco to Costco Wholesale Corporation.
It was in Burnaby, British Columbia is where the first Canadian Costo Wholesale Warehouse opened in 1985. The first 8 years of the operations are only open for membership that are business owners or government employees. In the same year where they changed their name in 1993, the requirements were changed and became open to businesses and the general public.
